Your kid's first barbershop haircut: how to make it easy

For some kids, a first trip to the barbershop is a big deal in the best way. For others, the buzz of the clippers and the big chair take a little getting used to. Either way, a bit of planning goes a long way.

Pick the right time

Book a time when your kid is usually at their best. For little ones that often means the morning, or after a nap rather than right before one. Avoid squeezing a cut in when they're hungry or tired. Booking ahead online also means no waiting around in the shop, which helps more than anything.

Talk about it first

Tell them what will happen: they'll sit in a big chair, wear a cape, and the barber will use scissors, a comb and clippers that buzz a little. Some kids like to watch a parent or older sibling get a cut first. Seeing someone else do it makes it feel normal.

Bring a photo, or keep it simple

If you have a style in mind, save a photo on your phone. If not, a simple, short cut is a great place to start. Tell the barber how much you want off and whether there's anything to keep, like a little length on top.

In the chair

  • Stay close. Being where they can see you makes most kids calmer.
  • Bring a distraction. A favorite toy or a show on your phone keeps their head still and their mind busy.
  • Let them ask questions. Barbers are happy to show a nervous kid the clippers and let them feel the buzz on their hand.
  • Praise them. Sitting still for a haircut is hard work when you're small.

Don't worry if they wiggle

Barbers cut kids' hair all the time. A little wriggling is expected, and if your kid needs a short break, that's fine. The aim of a first visit is a tidy cut and a kid who's happy to come back.

How often after that?

Most kids do well with a cut every four to six weeks, or a little sooner before school photos and family events.

Our kids' cut is for kids 12 and under. You can book it online like any other cut and choose your barber, so your kid sees the same friendly face each time. See the details on our prices page.
