Your first hot towel shave: what happens in the chair
Never had a straight razor shave? Here's what happens from the first warm towel to the last splash, and how to get the most out of it.

A hot towel shave is one of the oldest services in a barbershop, and one of the most relaxing. If you've only ever shaved yourself in a hurry before work, it's a different experience. Here's what to expect the first time.
Before you come in
Let your stubble grow for a day or two. A little length gives the razor something to work with and makes for a smoother result. Skip shaving the morning of your appointment, and if you have very sensitive skin, mention it when you sit down.
Step one: the hot towel
You'll lean back in the chair and your barber will wrap a warm towel around your face. The heat softens the hair and opens up the skin, which is what makes a close shave comfortable. Most people find this is the moment they start to relax.
Step two: the lather
Next comes a rich lather, worked in with a brush. It lifts the hairs away from the skin and gives the razor a smooth surface to glide over.
Step three: the razor
Your barber shaves with a straight razor in short, steady strokes, usually with the grain first. Depending on your skin and how close you want it, they may go over some areas a second time. Keep still, breathe normally and let them guide your head. It feels much gentler than people expect.
Step four: finishing up
A cool towel at the end closes things back up and calms the skin. Your barber will finish with something soothing so your face feels fresh rather than tight.
Looking after your skin afterward
- Keep your hands off your face for the rest of the day.
- Skip the gym or a hot sauna for a few hours.
- Use a plain, unscented moisturizer if your skin feels dry.
